The LaCie Mobile Drive series utilizes 2.5-inch mechanical hard drive (HDD) technology optimized for silent, low-power operation. Unlike the high-speed Rugged SSDs, these drives focus on capacity density—packing up to 5TB into a drive barely thicker than a smartphone.
The Secure variant incorporates a dedicated security chip within the drive controller. When enabled via the LaCie Toolkit, the drive remains locked and invisible to the operating system until a password is provided. This is hardware-level encryption, meaning even if the drive is removed from its casing and plugged into another machine, the data remains scrambled and unreadable without the key. The casing itself uses a passive cooling design, leveraging the aluminum exterior to dissipate heat without the need for a noisy internal fan.
